Red changing robe review
I’ve always been jealous of wild swimmers and paddleboarders wrapped up in their cozy changing robes after a day on the water. As someone who prefers a land-based adventure, I was pretty sure I didn’t fit into the change robe club – until I found Red Original.
While some will tell you these are only for the die-hard watersports fans, I’m here to introduce you to a new era for the changing robe.
Red changing robes are not only made for paddleboarding and swimming. They’re also great for camping, changing before a run, and even walks on the beach – which is largely where I’ve tested mine over the last month. Keep reading for our full review of the Red changing robe, and why it’s the perfect choice for all of your UK adventures.
Red Pro Change Robe – a fantastic DryRobe® alternative
Before I get any further into this article, it’s important to address the elephant in the room – the Red Pro Change Robe is not to be mistaken for the DryRobe®.
In fact, there’s a lot to shout about with this product that actually makes it a fantastic DryRobe® alternative. This Red Original garment is super high quality and even sits at a slightly cheaper price point than its closest competitor – something to keep in mind when you’re shopping.
With that said, let’s go into the full Red Pro Change Robe review – we’ll take you through the garment’s features, sizing, quality, and more below.
Outside the Red Original changing robe
The Red Changing robe is a serious piece of kit. The durable outer shell is waterproof, which has been perfect for battling the Cumbrian coastline while maintaining breathability.
The robe is also of a really good length (more on sizing later) which meant I could change whilst maintaining privacy if I ever needed to. I’m particularly looking forward to taking it on a Lake District hike soon, using it to change for swimming in one of our favourite tarns.
Choose one of seven colourways available on the Red Original site – I went for teal, but also have my eyes on the fuchsia pink!
Changing robe outer features
You will notice a number of cool features on the Red Original robe, starting with its adjustable cuffs. As Red’s sizing works on height rather than build, it’s really handy to be able to change the sleeves to fit you perfectly.
The robe also has a toggle hood design – this helps to protect against strong winds and keep the hood securely attached. A two-way YKK chunky zip and press studs will help to keep the robe intact, even in the harshest of conditions.
There’s a clear feature-favourite here though, and that is Red’s fleece-lined pockets. Is there anything better than snuggling up into warm pockets when you’re cold? You will find two lower down the robe for your hands, then an additional waterproof zipped pocket at the chest.
The only change I’d like to see from the robe is slightly larger hand pockets – it was difficult to find them quickly at times, though this could just be me!
Inside the Red Original changing robe
If you’ve owned a changing robe before, you’ll already know of the sheer comfort that comes with wearing one. But if this is to be your first changing robe, you’re in for a treat!
The garment has a soft and moisture-wicking inner lining that’s great for keeping you warm. I always feel toasty when wrapping up in mine, while the super breathable fleecing prevents me from getting sweaty.
Make sure to keep the colour of the inner fleece in mind when purchasing – the teal colourway comes with grey fleecing, but there’s also the choice of red or orange with certain robes.
Changing robe inner features
Are you ready for even more pockets? The inner lining of the Red changing robe has an additional zipped pocket to keep your phone, keys, wallet, and other valuables safe.
There’s a larger open pocket towards the bottom of the robe for water bottles and other items – this is also a discreet place to store underwear when changing.
Red Pro Change Robe sizing
The sizing of Red’s change robes works in height, not build – they’re specifically designed to be oversized allowing for plenty of room to change. I’m 5”4 and went for the medium, though a small would have probably also fit me well.
Having said this, going for the larger size is always a good idea to keep your modesty when switching between clothes. Make sure to check Red’s sizing guide to find your perfect fit!
Red Original Changing Robe in use
I was so excited to wear Red’s changing robe – it’s the literal definition of comfort and has accompanied me on many an adventure since receiving it. The robe has worked particularly well as a warm coat for walks on the beach – you really need to be protected against all weathers on the Cumbrian coastline, and it performed really well here.
As pictured, you’ll also see that I’ve used the robe to get warm after a dip in the sea. Its next adventure will be on our upcoming camping trip, where I’m set on using my robe instead of a towel for fast and fuss-free drying!
