HEIMPLANET Motion Ellipse review
The HEIMPLANET Motion Ellipse is a fantastic 25L backpack built with an active lifestyle in mind.
The pack combines both functional elements and innovative materials to create a truly unique pack developed for the widest possible range of activities.
The pack offers a great internal space for either a 3L hydration bladder or 15″ laptop – offering a super versatile package for both work and play.
Outside the backpack
Taking the pack at face value, the Ellipse is an undeniably good-looking bag that takes styling cues from throughout the HEIMPLANET brand.
The front of the backpack is dominated by the softshell expandable front compartment, a feature that is unique to the Motion series. This isn’t a feature to be overlooked and was very quickly noted to be a very clever piece of design, allowing for both large 1.5L water bottles as well additional equipment to be stored, even when the bag is packed to the brim.
The stretchy exterior also ensures that the interior is protected in adverse weather whilst the spandex layer can also be used to dry off any crucial equipment or clothing. The size of the stretch pockets can be adjusted with the buckled straps which double up to secure water bottles and, if you’re anything like me, hang all-important caps off of to dry out on a hot day.
As far as the harness system is concerned, a pretty simple but effective design is opted for. The straps offer minimal padding and, but with a 25L backpack, the weight in the pack is unlikely to cause any discomfort. Straps can be adjusted from both the top and bottom, ensuring the pack stays nice and close to the wearer – a feature that we really like.
A sternum strap, secured by a buckle, completes the harness and offers a fit that we really like, it’s minimal but incredibly effective. A simple, easily detachable hipbelt offers additional waist support and the option to purchase hipbelt pouches for additional storage can be found at the HEIMPLANET site.
The final piece of the exterior puzzle is that gorgeous back panel, an area that HEIMPLANET has clearly spent a lot of time developing. The back panel and shoulder straps both utilise this signature pattern, constructed with a 3D moulded EVA foam. Not only does this make for a space-age-looking pack, but it also reduces the contact area between the pack and wearer, minimising that nasty sweaty feeling.
Inside the backpack
Moving into the interior of the Motion Ellipse and there’s 25L of organised capacity to investigate.
The main compartment opens like a traditional backpack and is home to a laptop sleeve that doubles up as a hydration bladder for up to 3L of fluid. This is padded to a degree, although we would recommend using a thin sleeve for additional protection when carting around a PC or Mac. This is secured in place by an impressive buckle that reflects the quality of the overall pack.
In addition to the main compartment and the stretchy exterior storage there’s a pair of good-sized pockets on the front of the pack. The top pocket offers great space and accessibility for equipment, I typically use this for any food or snacks I’m taking with me. The lower pocket is a little smaller, but a great size for emergency supplies such as first aid kit and/or medical supplies.
Overall, the HEIMPLANET Motion Ellipse provides great organisation for a 25L all-purpose pack – great for both outdoor and city-based adventures.
Material and durability
HEIMPLANET has spent a huge amount of time and resources developing the materials that have gone into producing the pack and you can really tell once it’s in your hands.
From a technical standpoint, the clever use of materials is super impressive with 210D Ripstop Nylon Melange with PEVR lamination used for the bulk of the pack. The HEIMPLANET signature DYECOSHELL II, a 420D Nylon x 330D Nylon compound that’s been Dope Dyed to ensure that it’s both robust and environmentally friendly is used alongside Nylon Spandex to complete the exterior.
A 300D x 150D Polyester Lining that’s been once again Dope Dyed to ensure that the pack is environmentally friendly is used for the interior and Hypalon is chosen to deal with the high-stress points of the pack. Everything is tied together nicely with YKK Zippers and high-quality hardware to make for a truly impressive package.
Testing the HEIMPLANET Motion Ellipse
HEIMPLANET has been generous enough to send over one of their Motion Ellipse 25L backpacks in the dark colour scheme for us to get to grips with.
What really impressed us about the HEIMPLANET Motion Ellipse is just how effective the back panel and shoulder straps really are. The tech used to design the unique pattern is highlighted on the site, but rather than proving to be a sales-orientated USP, the back panel and straps are actually some of the best that we’ve used.
The organisation of the pack is another area that we were pleased to use when testing the pack. The stretchy exterior is great for taking large bottles on hikes, something that I personally highly recommend and everything feels super secure without the risk of anything slipping out on the trail. One of our favourite details on the pack is the floating interior pocket, allowing for valuables to be always accessible in the main pack.
One gripe that we do have with the pack is the cumbersome sternum strap adjustment. HEIMPLANET appear to have used an innovative system to move the sternum strap vertically, but this is incredibly fiddly and users will struggle to move this on the go – you’ll have to take the pack off to move this when required.
Overall verdict
Although we were originally a little sceptical about the functionality of the HEIMPLANET Motion Ellipse, we are actually incredibly impressed with the backpack.
A clever organisation system, plenty of space for water and equipment in the stretchy exterior and an impressive foam backpanel has made this a serious contentor for one of the best outdoor packs that we’ve tested.
The quality is second-to-none with a serious amount of effort pumped into the design of the pack, the materials used and the high-quality hardware featured throughout. It’s safe to say that we’ll be using the Motion Ellipse around the lakes for the foreseeable future!
