Black Diamond Spot 350 Headtorch Review

One of the most popular headlamps from the team at Black Diamond, and our overall top headtorch pick, the Spot 350 is a fantastic all-around illuminator.

Perfect for winter hikes, night-time climbing, or early-morning trail running, the Black Diamond Spot 350 not only looks great but performs flawlessly out in the hills, forests and mountains.

Buttons/modes

You won’t find a mass of buttons and dials on the Black Diamond Spot 350 – there are just two main buttons that you’ll find on the top of the torch body.

A large rectangular button is used to cycle the device through each of the main light modes and a smaller circular button is used to digitally lock the lamp choice in place. Users can also toggle the main beam by tapping a touch sensor on the right of the body, allowing quick toggling between brightness levels.

A 350W central main beam, a 6W proximity lamp, and a handy red lamp can all be selected when using the Spot 350. A combination of the 350W central main beam and the 6W proximity lamp can be used for maximum visibility.

Alongside the standard illumination, users can also select a strobe mode (in both white and red light). This is only reserved for emergency situations and is a feature that we recommend that all hikers look for when looking for their next headtorch.

LED power levels

The battery level of the Black Diamond Spot 350 is shown visually with three small LED bulbs on the left of the main torch body.

The maximum battery life of the Spot 350 sits at 200 hours at 6 lumens, although the maximum time drops dramatically to just 4 hours when using the maximum 350 lumens. If possible, we would recommend carrying a trio of extra AAA batteries when heading out on long hikes in the colder months, especially if the lamp has recently been used.

There is no option for a rechargeable Li-ion battery in the Spot 350, but this lack of a charging cable is the sacrifice made for the IPX8 waterproofing. For users that would prefer a rechargeable headtorch, why not try the Black Diamond Sprint 225?

Inside the headtorch

The Black Diamond Spot 350 is opened with a simple clip found on the left-hand side of the torch body.

Here you’ll find all three AAA batteries used to power the lamp. These can be easily popped out and replaced when power is running low. To reassemble the headtorch, simply press close the clip and you’re good to go once more. It’s a simple design, but it’s highly practical and ensures that the lamp is mighty tough and highly waterproof.

How to Open the Black Diamond Spot 350

Adjustable strap

The strap of the Spot 350 is fully adjustable, offering a one-size-fits-all headtorch that can be worn by just about anyone. The stretchy elastic ensures a comfortable, snug fit that won’t budge whether you’re trail running or rock climbing.

The strap is the only real stylistic choice of the Black Diamond Spot 350 and a dark camouflage design is, for us, one of the fun selling points of the lamp. We’re a big fan of this model of headtorch, although there is a newly updated option for those searching for the latest gear.

The updated model offers six different colourways with buyers able to choose between Aluminium, Azul, Dark Olive, Graphite, Octane and Rose. The hardware is more-or-less the same, the only real differences lie in the colour choices available – but what could be cooler than the original dark camo?

Overall verdict – Black Diamond Spot 350

The Black Diamond Spot 350 headlamp is one of the most popular headlamps for a reason.

With a maximum beam strength of 350W, a comfortable elastic headband, a 6W proximity lamp, and a red lamp option – the Spot 350 has everything you could need in a headtorch. Some may prefer recharging capabilities – but the waterproof design of the Spot 350 means we’re happy to sacrifice a Li-ion option.

Ultimately, the Black Diamond Spot 350 is a fantastic, reliable, powerful headtorch that more than fits the bill for UK adventures!
