Decathlon down jacket review

There’s nothing better than a good down jacket when the days get cooler, but our thermal friends can be undeniably expensive – which is where Decathlon comes into play.

Decathlon has been an Adventure Pending favourite for a while now – we love that it offers an affordable, one-stop-shop to get people kitted up and into the great outdoors. The brand’s down jacket options are no different, as we’ve learned while testing its Mountain Trekking Jacket over the last couple of months. Priced at just under £60, it’s a fraction of the cost of most on the market and performs just as well.

How warm is the Mountain Trekking down jacket?

Thermal insulation is a great way to combat the UK’s cold winter months, but it’s important to check your chosen down jacket is up to standard before purchasing. Decathlon certainly meets the mark with its Mountain Trekking jacket whilst sticking at a budget-friendly price point.

'FORCLAZ' label on Decathlon down jacket

The Decathlon down jacket uses a mix of 85% down and 15% feathers to keep you warm up to -5°C when active, and 5°C when static. This filling is RDS certified, meaning it has been sourced from certified farms.

To get the most out of your jacket, we recommend pairing it with two other layers such as a t-shirt and lightweight fleece. There’s also the option to upgrade to the brand’s MT500, which has you covered all the way to -10.

Down jacket features

This simple down jacket features just two main outer pockets, but one of these provides a great travel option for your new layer.

Open the double-zipped left-hand pocket and turn it inside out to provide a stuff bag for your jacket to store away. This is really easy in practice and is great for packing into your rucksack. To keep your Decathlon down jacket looking and performing at its best, just remember to remove it from the pouch to store over longer periods.

Fit and sizing

Decathlon’s Mountain Trekking Down Jacket is available in men’s and women’s sizes. The men’s jacket is available in sizes S up to 3XL, while the women’s chart ranges from XS to 2XL. Decathlon’s size guide can help you to make the right choice.

In our photos, Ann is wearing the women’s medium and Adam is in the men’s extra large. We sized up to allow room for an extra fleece underneath and found the fit of the jackets to be very good.

Testing the Decathlon down jacket

When we say these jackets have been everywhere, they really have. They’ve tackled hikes in the Lake District, wind on bitter UK beaches, and strolls through the woods. Heck, they’ve even kept us snug on November ferry rides through Croatia and freezing temperatures in Poland over Christmas. These Decathlon down jackets really have seen it all, and they’ve performed well in every challenge thrown at them.

We know these jackets are designed for hiking, but they’ve quickly become our go-to in most situations. Nipping out to the corner shop? Down jacket. Autumnal picnic? Down jacket. Night boat ride back to the mainland after an insane 11-mile walk through the Croatian wilderness? Down jacket. You get the gist.

Not only have we loved the mountain trekking jackets for their warmth, but the ability to pack them away is second to none. It means we’re always prepared with an extra layer should we need it, but without any of the extra bulk or weight that often comes with shoving a coat into your bag. It’s also easy to clean and reproof down jackets to keep them performing at their best.

Warranty and sustainability

These jackets may be cheaper than others on the market, but they’re still a pretty big purchase – which is why you’ll be happy to know that they come with a two-year warranty.

Decathlon also runs in-store workshops to repair any snags or pulls to your jacket with heat-bonded patches – we love that this promotes long-term wear and works against fast fashion.

Overall verdict

The Decathlon trekking down jacket might not have some of the features or technology of big-name brands, but for the price, you really can’t beat it. If you’re looking for your first down jacket, or a good all-round coat, we’d definitely recommend trying one of these out.
